> **Note:** Quick answers to common questions about Character Studio. Find answers to the most frequently asked questions.

## General Questions

### What is Character Studio?

Character Studio is a platform for creating, testing, and managing AI characters. You can create characters with unique personalities, chat with them, share them with others, and integrate them into external applications.

### Is Character Studio free?

Character Studio offers a free tier with basic features and limited credits. Paid subscriptions provide more credits, storage, and features. See [Subscription Tiers](/character-studio/pricing-credits/subscription-tiers.md) for details.

### What AI models are available?

Character Studio supports multiple AI models including GPT-4, Claude, and various open-source models. Available models may vary based on your subscription tier. See [Advanced Settings](/character-studio/character-features/advanced-settings.md) for model selection.

## Character Creation

### How do I create my first character?

1. Log in to Character Studio
2. Click **New Character**
3. Choose a creation mode (Quick Create recommended for beginners)
4. Fill in the basic information
5. Save your character

See [Your First Character](/character-studio/getting-started/your-first-character.md) for a detailed walkthrough.

### What's the difference between creation modes?

| Mode             | Best For                     |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------- |
| Quick Create | Beginners, simple characters |
| Agent Mode | Getting AI assistance |
| Blueprint Editor | Detailed customization       |
| Expert Mode | Direct JSON editing |

See [Creation Modes](/character-studio/creation-modes.md) for full details.

### How do I make my character more consistent?

* Write clear, specific personality descriptions
* Include dialogue examples showing typical responses
* Use the lorebook for important world information
* Test with the Benchmark Arena
* Iterate based on results

See [Prompt Engineering](/character-studio/advanced/prompt-engineering.md) for techniques.

### How long should my character description be?

Keep it concise but comprehensive:

* **Minimum**: 50-100 tokens for basic personality
* **Recommended**: 200-500 tokens for well-defined character
* **Maximum**: Under 2000 tokens to leave room for conversation

Quality matters more than length. Be specific rather than verbose.

## Chat & Conversation

### Why isn't my character responding?

Common causes:

1. **No credits** — Check your balance
2. **Network issue** — Refresh the page
3. **Model unavailable** — Try a different model

See [Troubleshooting](/character-studio/reference/troubleshooting.md) for detailed solutions.

### How do I start a new conversation?

Click **New Chat** or create a new session from the chat interface. This clears the conversation history and starts fresh.

### Can I save chat history?

Yes, chat sessions are saved automatically. You can access previous sessions from the Chat History page.

### Why does my character forget things?

AI has a limited context window. When conversations get long, older messages are trimmed. To persist important information:

* Use pinned memories
* Include key facts in the character definition
* Use lorebook entries with keywords

See [Memory System](/character-studio/chat-features/memory-system.md) for details.

## Images & Media

### How do I add an avatar to my character?

1. Open your character in the editor
2. Click on the avatar area
3. Upload an image or generate one with AI
4. Save your character

### What image formats are supported?

* PNG (recommended)
* JPEG
* WebP

Maximum recommended size: 1 MB. Larger images are automatically compressed.

### How do I generate a character image?

1. Open your character
2. Go to **Image Generation**
3. Enter a description or use the character info
4. Click **Generate**
5. Select and save the image you like

See [Image Generation](/character-studio/media-assets/image-generation.md) for details.

## Import & Export

### How do I share my character?

Options for sharing:

1. **Character Card PNG** — Image with embedded data
2. **JSON file** — Data-only format
3. **Direct link** — If character is public
4. **Embed widget** — For websites

See [Import & Export](/character-studio/import-export.md) for details.

### Can I import characters from other platforms?

Yes, Character Studio supports:

* CCv2 character cards
* CCv3 character cards
* JSON format exports
* Character Asset Kit (CAK) files

See [Platform Compatibility](/character-studio/import-export/platform-compatibility.md) for supported platforms.

### How do I export my character?

1. Open your character
2. Click the **Export** button
3. Choose format (PNG card or JSON)
4. Download the file

## Lorebooks

### What is a lorebook?

A lorebook is a collection of world-building information that gets injected into conversations when relevant keywords are mentioned. This helps characters know about their world without bloating the character definition.

See [Lorebooks](/character-studio/character-features/lorebooks.md) for full documentation.

### How do keywords work?

When any keyword in a lorebook entry appears in the conversation, that entry's content is added to the context. Multiple entries can trigger at once, up to the token budget.

### How much lorebook content can I have?

Limited by token budget (typically 10-25% of context). More entries can be created, but only triggered entries consume tokens.

## Pricing & Credits

### How do credits work?

Credits are consumed by:

* Chat messages (varies by model)
* Image generation
* AI-assisted features

Credits never expire. See [Credit System](/character-studio/pricing-credits/credit-system.md) for details.

### What happens when I run out of credits?

* Chat features pause
* You can still browse and edit
* Purchase more credits to continue
* Subscription users get monthly bonus

### How do I get more credits?

1. **Purchase** — Buy credit packages
2. **Subscribe** — Monthly bonus with subscription
3. **Free tier** — Limited monthly allocation

## Technical Questions

### What are tokens?

Tokens are the units AI models use to process text. Roughly:

* 1 token ≈ 4 characters
* 1 token ≈ 0.75 words
* "Hello world" ≈ 2-3 tokens

See [Token Management](/character-studio/advanced/token-management.md) for details.

### What's a context window?

The context window is the total amount of text an AI can consider at once, including:

* Character definition
* Lorebook entries
* Chat history
* Your current message

When this fills up, older messages are trimmed.

### Can I use the API?

Yes, Character Studio offers API access for programmatic character management and chat. See [API Integration](/character-studio/advanced/api-integration.md) for documentation.

## Account & Billing

### How do I change my password?

1. Go to **Settings** → **Account**
2. Click **Change Password**
3. Enter current and new password
4. Save changes

### How do I cancel my subscription?

1. Go to **Settings** → **Subscription**
2. Click **Cancel Subscription**
3. Confirm cancellation

You'll retain access until the end of your billing period.
